Getting Around, Cozumel Travel, Transport and Car Rental

Visitors will soon find that getting around Cozumel is not difficult and most base themselves in the town of San Miguel, where a handful of transport options present themselves. Cozumel Airport lies around 3 km / 2 miles north of San Miguel and serves the entire island.
Whilst there is bus transport available around Cozumel, many tourists choose to steer well clear of buses and leave them to the locals, since the whole network of routes is a little vague. However, taxis are extremely cheap and amongst the most convenient and simple ways to travel to the island's best beaches and resorts.

USA. The airport itself features a single terminal and eight individual boarding gates. From Cozumel Airport, travel options include shuttle vans, although from San Miguel, taxis are the best mode of transport.

Car Rental
Rental cars in Cozumel vary greatly in price, depending upon the make, model and age, with old VW Beetles being especially cheap. Hire car transport does tend to be a little more expensive during the peak season, between December and January.
Plenty of car rental travel agencies are to be found around the main plaza in San Miguel de Cozumel, with a conveniently located petrol station located nearby and to the east, along the Avenida Juárez. Both motorbikes and scooters can also be rented in Cozumel and are a great way to freely travel around the island, with the helmet law always being strictly enforced. Vehicle rental requires a valid driving license, credit card and deposit.
Buses and Coaches
Buses only stop at designated points when passengers have made a request, so always make sure that the driver is made well aware of your intended destination and travel plans. The main bus station in Cozumel is situated close to the ferry dock, along the Playa del Carmen.
Taxis
Taxi transportation in Cozumel is an inexpensive way to travel to the beaches and the western shoreline around San Miguel, with luggage generally costing a little extra. Cab drivers are happy to accept payment in either US dollars or Mexican pesos, although it is best to carry the exact change for payment.
Boats and Ferries
Passenger ferries regularly travel from Cozumel to the nearby Playa del Carmen, while car ferries travel from the Puerto Morelos, a slightly longer journey lasting up to two hours. Ferry transport operates on an hourly basis, between 09:00 and 18:00, with reduced services on Sundays, and affords some great views along the way, so be sure to bring your camera.
Bicycles
Renting a bicycle in Cozumel is a great alternative to more mainstream modes of public transport. Bicycles can be rented on an hourly or daily basis and provide the perfect way to travel around the relatively flat island of Cozumel, with the Bahia Chankanaab being a popular cycle destination.
